FinanciaI Considerations on Moving to New Zealand

You are either on your way or newly arrived in New Zealand and setting up your new life.

In order to make that new life successful, one key thing you need to do is look at your overseas finances and understand how they translate to your situation in New Zealand. Moving to another country is not necessarily as simple as packing everything away in boxes. Part of your move, or return to New Zealand will involve the transfer of funds, establishing various insurances and planning for your future. The best time to start thinking about these issues is as soon as possible.

Some of the things you might want to think about are listed below

• You should be able to transfer these funds to NZ depending on your country of residence.
• You will have greater control over these funds by holding them locally in NZ.
• You will have greater investment opportunities.
• You might be able to access some of your fund prior to your retirement date with no further tax to pay.

ISAs, PEPs, TESSAs
• You will need to understand what you can do with them in the UK.
• What your tax liabilities might be in NZ and within what timeframe.
• What investment options you will have in NZ.

Unit Trusts or Shares
• What will be your tax liabilities in the UK and NZ.
• What options are available to you and the timeframes within which to act.
• What investment options are available to you in NZ.

Life and Health Protection
• What you should be doing with you UK providers.
• Whether you should retain the cover in the UK and for potentially how long.
• When you should look at taking new cover here in NZ.
• What cover is available to you in NZ and how it is structured.

Currency/savings in the UK
• How best to get these funds to NZ.
• What options are available.
• If you have Wills in the UK.
• What you can do in NZ and when.
• The differing ways in which your funds/wealth can be protected.

Banking
• Who to use in NZ and how the system works.
• What to do about your UK account(s).

Tax Issues
• What you need to do as you leave the UK with the UK authorities.
• What you need to do in NZ and how to go about it.

Investigating some or all of these issues early will assist in getting you settled and established in New Zealand, and may help you to enjoy a more prosperous.
